Resources: Life After VISTA

Using the Ed Award

Using Your Segal Education Award: CNCS has create many resources to help VISTA members use their Segal Education Award to the fullest extent. Click the link to watch a recorded webinar on using your Education Award, as well as a list of helpful resources.

Student Loan Forbearance: VISTA members are eligible to postpone payments on qualified federal student loans during their term of service (called a forbearance). Upon successful completion of service, members are also eligible to have all or a portion of the interest that accrued during their term paid off.

Matching Institutions: Many colleges and universities are willing to match your Education Award when pursuing further education. CNCS has created a list of colleges and universities known to match Education Awards. Regardless of whether your preferred educational institution is listed, be sure to ask about matching opportunities when applying to continue education after VISTA.

Non-Competitive Eligibility Status

Once you’ve successfully completed service, you will receive one year of non-competitive eligibility for employment in the federal government.

This special hiring status enables you to apply for federal jobs with the advantage of not having to go through the standard public competitive selection process. That means that you can be appointed to federal positions that may or may not be available to the general public. In addition, your application could be processed faster than others.

NCE does not guarantee you a federal job, but it does provide a valuable opportunity!

VISTA Blog: Stay Connected In The Know Involved

During my year as a VISTA, I learned more than I could have ever imagined about nonprofits, solar energy, poverty, living on a budget, meaningful connections, and myself.

The monthly cohort trainings and the support received from the Initiative Foundation as a host site provides me with experiences that strengthen my capacity to be a servant leader and become my best self.

AmeriCorps VISTA gave me the opportunity to network with incredibly inspiring organizations and individuals in my community working to address [poverty] issues every day. The best part? I was able to work with many of them on projects often given to more experienced professionals in the private sector, and provided with a safe space to learn and grow.
